DAY 3: February 11th
Today was our first full day in Italy, and we started it off by sleeping in until 8. After having breakfast, we took a short walk around Sorrento before leaving in a bus to go to the Amalfi coast. Our tour guide was explaining that the roads that we took to get there were referred to as "mamma mia" roads, and I can understand why. They are two-way streets on the side of a cliff just a little wider than two of our buses side by side, with nearly 90 degree turns, separated from the plunge downward by only a short fence going up to my waist.
We stopped at a small store with hand-made ceramics for a short break before heading down to the coast. There, we were given two hours to eat and wander around. We split into smaller groups, and my group and I found a small pizza place where you could get full pizzas for just 5 euros. It was extremely good, but unfortunately it started raining so we had to eat it under a roof. Luckily, it let up, and we had time afterward to go down to the beach, see the Amalfi Cathedral, get gelato, and go to a few stores. The beach was probably my favorite place in Amalfi. The waves were really big and my shoes got soaked (sorry mom), but the view was amazing and it was really warm when the sun was out. After we got back to our hotel in Sorrento, we had a couple of hours before we had to go to dinner, so we walked around the town some more and looked inside the shops that were there. We tried to find a store that sold cool Italy socks, and though we didn't, I still bought a couple of souvenirs to take home. We finished off our day with dinner at the same place as yesterday, which was definitely not a problem with any of us.
Note: Due to the weather, we are switching a few days around on our itinerary. We are hiking Mt. Vesuvius tomorrow (2/12), and going to Capri on Thursday (2/14).
